24-Hour Supervision

24-Hour Supervision

24-hour supervision means someone is there around the clock. It is for people who cannot safely be left alone for long stretches, whether because of a health condition, a disability, memory changes, or a risk of falls that makes being alone at night genuinely unsafe.

The point of this service is not constant hovering. It is that at any hour, including the middle of the night, there is a person present who knows you, knows what to look out for, and can respond straight away.

For many households it is the arrangement that makes staying at home possible at all.

Awake staff, not just someone on the premises

Where the support plan calls for it, overnight cover is provided by staff who are awake and on duty rather than sleeping in the house. That distinction matters. Someone who is awake notices a fall, a wander, a change in breathing or a call for help at the moment it happens, not in the morning.

Exactly what the overnight arrangement looks like – how many hours, awake or otherwise, and what the staff are there to do – is set by your assessment and your support plan rather than decided in advance.

What round-the-clock support covers

  1. A caregiver present through the night as well as the day.
  2. Help getting up, going to bed, and anything needed in between.
  3. Support with toileting and personal care at any hour.
  4. Assistance moving safely around the home, including at night.
  5. Being on hand if someone becomes disoriented, unsettled or distressed.
  6. Responding immediately to a fall or a sudden change.
  7. Meals, medication reminders and the ordinary daily routine.
  8. Company through the parts of the day and night that feel longest.

Nights are the reason most families call

Daytime is usually manageable. Nights are what wear people down. A family caregiver who is listening for movement at two in the morning is not really sleeping, and that accumulates week after week until something has to change.

Overnight cover ends that. The person being supported gets help the moment they need it, and everyone else in the house gets to actually sleep. It is often the single change that keeps a home care arrangement sustainable rather than heading towards a move.

Keeping the home feeling like a home

Continuous support should not turn a house into a ward. We keep the routine as ordinary as we can: normal bedtimes, normal furniture, normal conversation, and as much privacy and independence as is safe.

Where someone can still do things for themselves, they do. Supervision is about being present and ready, not about removing choices that a person is perfectly capable of making.

Getting started

Support usually begins with a conversation. An assessment determines what you are eligible for, and the level and pattern of supervision is agreed with you and your lead agency or case manager. Because round-the-clock cover involves a rota of caregivers, we take particular care over introductions so that the people in your home overnight are familiar rather than strangers.

Who this is for

Older adults, individuals with disabilities, and individuals with chronic conditions who need a supportive presence through the day and night to remain safely at home. Eligibility and the hours of support are determined by the person’s assessment and support plan. 24-hour supervision is one of the services covered by our integrated home care license carrying the Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) designation, across 11 Minnesota counties.

If you are weighing up whether this is the right level of support, talk to us. It is a significant arrangement and it is worth working through properly rather than guessing.
